The impact that land use has on the demand for travel and use of transport facilities has been well researched. Ways of analysing the processes are well established.

It is also widely understood that the level of transport infrastructure can affect the ultimate distribution of land uses. This is because development pressures are affected by changes in accessibility. Major transport infrastructure projects can significantly alter accessibility, thus creating changed pressures for development. Quantifying these pressures can improve our understanding of likely land use trends. VLC has developed an iterative approach to modelling this interaction that we have put to good use on many projects.

Past land use - transport studies include:

  • The Brisbane Land Use and Transport Strategy Study which was a major input to the development of a revised strategic land-use plan for Brisbane that resulted in a land-use/transport strategy, the major elements of which are closely integrated.

  • Melbourne Outer Ring Road Study which involved identifying likely urban development, land use and transport implications of completing Melbourne’s outer ring freeway system.
