Land Use & Demographic Forecasting
VLC maintains a comprehensive and detailed current and future land use datasets to support strategic transport modelling and infrastructure planning. VLC has undertaken extensive data acquisition, research and fieldwork to ensure the accuracy of small area demographic and socioeconomic data that underpins forecasting of travel demand for major regions across Australia. VLC maintains its own scenarios of land use projections, integrating planning information from various local, state and federal government bureaux, supplemented with knowledge of proposed developments.
VLC’s methodology for demographic development is a combination of a top-down and bottom-up approach. Estimates of population and employment are constrained using a top-down approach, introducing consistency, meshed with a ‘bottom-up’ approach using detailed land used at the small area level. Our approach provides rigour, flexibility and efficiency in delivering outcomes for any required zoning systems for any planning horizon within a framework that tests data validity and integrity.
VLC's Specialised System
One of the distinguishing features of VLC’s demographic development is the use of its Land Use Mapping and Rationalisation system (LUMAR) is a spatial database management system which enables a dynamic and strategic approach to land use and demographic data development, allowing for spatial management and manipulation of demographic data. It provides an efficient means of both testing for data anomalies and undertaking spatial allocations of alternative land use scenarios.
