VLC and its staff have developed particular expertise in the
planning of transportation strategies for special events.
Typically, these studies involve the preparation of travel demand
forecasts for a number of separate activities at different venues.
Quite often, demands associated with special events occur at the same
time as everyday commuter travel and innovative solutions are called
for. Some studies our staff have completed include:
-
Transport for the Commonwealth Games (Brisbane, 1982)
Mike Veitch, then working for the Queensland Government, was
the project manager and chairman of the Games Transportation
Committee. His role was to co-ordinate the development of the
detailed transport strategy (for athletes, Games officials and
VIPs as well as for spectators). Brian Davis, now associated
with VLC, was responsible for the planning and operation of
Brisbane City Council’s bus services to provide spectator
transport for the Games.
-
Expo 88 Transport Arrangements
The work involved the design and implementation of the road
traffic and transport arrangements for Expo 88. Expo 88
attracted an average of 80,000 people per day over its
six-month duration.
-
Sydney’s Bid for the Olympics in 2000
Terry Scholes was responsible for developing an overall
transport strategy for Sydney’s successful bid for the Games
in 2000. Terry was subsequently commissioned to prepare a
detailed operating plan for the transport of athletes, key
Games officials and VIP’s from Sydney Airport to the Village
at Homebush Bay. He has since advised on pedestrian planning
issues associated with stadium and the major bus interchange
serving the stadium.
-
Parliament House Opening, Canberra
The task was to assess the scale of the various demands on
roadspace, parking and general transport capacity and to
define appropriate transport strategies to meet the competing
needs.
